Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
