The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
